Duration:
60 min.

Can a forest become a shrine? In Čiurlionis music – certainly. At this concert, his symphonic poem “In the Forest” will end up surrounded by a surprising array of French organ music – nestled amid Jehan Alain’s suspenseful Litanies, Maurice Duruflé’s musical dedication and Louis Vierne’s grand “Final” from Symphony No. 6. In this context, Čiurlionis’ forest will be unveiled not so much as a scene taken from nature, but rather, as a mystical inner space in which silence, suspense and the sensation of infinity are combined.

This exclusive programme has been arranged by Karolina Juodelytė – winner of the 1st Prize in the International M. K. Čiurlionis Piano and Organ Competition in 2011, and a recipient of six special prizes (among them, for best performance of Čiurlionis’ works and his fugue).

In her hands, the organ at St Casimir’s Church will be transformed into an entire orchestra capable of conveying the quiet breathing of the forest, the tension of prayer and the triumphant power of the finale.

Programme

Jehan Alain (1911–1940)
Litanies

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911)
Symphonic Poem In the Forest (transcribed for organ by Karolina Juodelytė)
