Lithuania’s leaders in contemporary music present the international attention-grabbing piece, Hadal zone – an acoustic and visual experience taking audiences down to the depths of the ocean. The experience is achieved by harnessing the lowest-range live instrumental music, electronica and a light installation.
Scientists divide the ocean into five zones based on depth and the degree of penetration of light. As one goes ever deeper, the level of darkness gradually increases. At a depth of more than 6000 metres underwater, one is in the so-called Hadal zone. Yet to be fully explored, this is the darkest space known to man.
“This piece has a very clear concept behind it – we are plunged into the deepest zone in our ocean. It envelops us, affecting us emotionally and physiologically. Interestingly, when working with composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, we uncover ever new layers in the composition, which I hope audiences will also be able to grasp intuitively”, says Marta Finkelštein, the artistic director of the Synaesthesis ensemble.
